Finding the Right Primary School in London

London has more than 3,000 state primary schools spread across 32 boroughs — more than any other region in the UK. That makes it one of the best places in the country for school choice, but also one of the most bewildering. Many parents find it genuinely difficult to know where to begin.

The results above show all open state primary schools in London, sorted by Ofsted rating. Outstanding schools sit at the top — these are schools where inspectors found teaching, leadership, and pupil outcomes to all be exceptional. Good schools make up the majority, and that is exactly as it should be. A Good school in London is often an excellent school in practice.

What makes a London primary stand out?

London's best primary schools tend to share a few things in common. They have strong, visible leadership — a head teacher who is known by name to parents and children alike, and whose vision for the school is clear. They communicate well and often, keeping families informed about what their children are learning and how they are getting on. And they have a calm, purposeful atmosphere in which children feel settled and safe.

The borough matters too. Schools in some London boroughs receive significantly more funding per pupil than others, which can affect staffing ratios, resources, and the range of enrichment activities on offer. When comparing schools across borough boundaries, it is worth keeping this in mind.

How to use these search results

Start by narrowing down your search using the filters on the left. Most families find it practical to shortlist schools within about a mile of home. Then check each school's Ofsted rating, click through to the school profile for the full inspection breakdown, and — most importantly — visit the schools that interest you. An open day or informal visit will always tell you more than any inspection report can.

🎯 London School Application Tips

📅

Apply early — deadline is JanuaryPrimary school applications in England close in mid-January for September entry. Missing the deadline significantly reduces your options.

📍

Distance matters enormouslyMany London primaries use straight-line distance as their main admissions criterion. Being 0.1 miles closer can make a real difference to whether you get a place.

Check faith school criteria carefullyChurch of England and Catholic schools often require evidence of regular worship. Read the admissions policy before applying.

🔄

Stay on the waiting listMany families get their preferred school through the waiting list after the initial round. Do not give up if you don't get your first choice in March.

📊

Check last year's admission distanceEach borough publishes how far the furthest offer reached the previous year. This tells you realistically whether you are likely to get in.
